We took a morning bus to Bratislava, Slovakia and as we got off the bus on that beautiful Sunday there was live music wafting through the air and a marathon going through the city! We were confused about the instructions to get to the hostel so we asked many marathon helpers how to get to the Presidential Palace, since it was by our hostel. We walked through the beautiful city centre to find our Backpackers Hostel…which is also a bar. We were given a coupon for a “welcome drink” which was actually a shot of some kind of Slovakian liquor! Then we grabbed some lunch there and climbed up, up, up to the castle which was free to walk around! Here’s the castle entrance:
And the castle itself:
And the view of Bratislava from the top of the hill!
Then we went in to explore the castle museum and I took a great mirror selfie. Maybe even the best mirror selfie:
We explored the castle for awhile. This is the view from the top of the castle looking the other way towards the old town:
EVERYTHING IN EUROPE IS JUST SO FREAKING PRETTY LIKE HOW
Anyways I got into some castle shenanigans:
And then we trekked back down the hill where we passed this hilarious…beer advertisement? I don’t actually know but I thought it was hilarious:
And then continued into the city centre which had lovely cobblestoned streets and funny statues everywhere!
We felt like SUCH TOURISTS taking these pictures but it was a little bit irresistible – they were just so funny! Then we got one euro ice cream cones and headed to the Cathedral. I’m going to be honest, all of the cathedrals and castles we’re seeing are all gorgeous but they are starting to blend together. I think this one was called St. Martin’s Cathedral? Here are some pictures!
Then we visited another church – called the Blue Church because it’s very, very blue!
It was really fun to see all these places but so much walking is tiring so we did some more wandering of old town and then settled in a little outside table where we spent the evening having beers, Slovakian soda, and Slovakian food. My new favorite dish is haluzky and I’m going to miss it so much. Also how Slovakians are so smiley and funny. It’s been a good afternoon & evening and even though we only really got a taste of Slovakia, it was definitely a good taste:
Also! Fun fact! The horror movie “Hostel” takes place in Bratislava. We stayed in a hostel and all made it out alive (despite the contradictory picture)! We are now Budapest-bound!
